Background of the Study
Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) have long been recognized as vital forums for enhancing school governance and fostering collaboration between parents and educators. In Nigeria, the role of PTAs has gained renewed importance between 2023 and 2025 as efforts to improve school accountability and academic performance intensify (Chinwe, 2023). PTAs are designed to create a structured platform for dialogue, where parents can engage with school administrators and teachers to discuss issues related to resource allocation, curriculum implementation, and overall school management. This collaborative approach is seen as crucial for building a supportive educational environment that promotes student success.

Recent reforms have sought to strengthen PTAs by providing them with more defined roles and responsibilities, as well as the legal and financial frameworks necessary to influence school governance. Enhanced PTA involvement is expected to lead to better decision-making, increased transparency, and improved oversight of school operations. Evidence suggests that schools with active and well-organized PTAs tend to have higher levels of community involvement, better resource mobilization, and improved academic outcomes (Oluwaseun, 2024). Nevertheless, challenges such as low parental participation, lack of training for PTA members, and limited authority within school governance structures have hindered their effectiveness.

The study aims to examine how PTAs influence school governance in Nigerian schools by analyzing their impact on administrative efficiency, accountability, and academic performance. By integrating quantitative data with qualitative insights from parents, teachers, and school administrators, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive appraisal of the role of PTAs and to identify best practices for enhancing their contribution to school management.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized potential of Parent-Teacher Associations in improving school governance, many Nigerian schools face challenges in achieving effective PTA engagement. One significant problem is the low level of parental participation, which is often attributed to socio-economic constraints, lack of awareness, and time limitations among parents (Adeniyi, 2023). This low engagement undermines the capacity of PTAs to serve as effective advocates for transparency and accountability in school management.

Furthermore, the authority of PTAs is frequently limited by hierarchical school governance structures that prioritize administrative decisions over community input. This has resulted in a disconnect between the objectives of PTAs and the actual decision-making processes in schools. Additionally, many PTA members lack the necessary training and resources to effectively contribute to school governance, further diminishing their impact. These issues are compounded by a lack of standardized frameworks for PTA operations, leading to inconsistent practices across different schools.

The study seeks to investigate these challenges by exploring how the structure, participation, and capacity of PTAs affect school governance and, ultimately, academic performance. By identifying the barriers to effective PTA involvement, the research aims to propose recommendations for enhancing the role of these associations in shaping school policies and improving educational outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the impact of PTAs on school governance in Nigerian schools.
  • To identify challenges that hinder effective PTA participation and influence.
  • To recommend strategies for strengthening the role of PTAs in school management.

Research Questions

  • How do PTAs influence school governance in Nigerian educational institutions?
  • What are the main barriers to effective PTA participation?
  • Which strategies can enhance the role of PTAs in school decision-making processes?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: Active PTA engagement positively influences school governance.
  • H₂: Socio-economic constraints significantly limit PTA participation.
  • H₃: Training and standardized frameworks improve the effectiveness of PTAs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study examines the role of PTAs in Nigerian schools from 2023 to 2025. Limitations include regional differences in parental engagement, variability in school governance structures, and potential biases in self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs): Organized groups that facilitate collaboration between parents and teachers for school improvement.
  • School Governance: The processes and structures through which schools are managed and decisions are made.
  • Parental Participation: The extent to which parents are actively involved in school activities and decision-making.
